Music Theory
Learn FASTER and Understand the music you’re playing.
Build the musical language behind your instrument or voice through a structured pathway in rhythm, notation, scales, chords, harmony, listening and song structure.
Why theory matters
Move from playing notes to understanding music.
Theory gives students a framework for recognizing patterns, reading with more confidence and connecting what they hear to what they play. A structured pathway makes those concepts easier to build step by step instead of learning them as isolated rules.
See how theoretical concepts show up in repertoire, technique and everyday playing.
Recognize patterns and make more informed musical decisions on your own.
Course syllabus preview
A clear pathway from foundations to application.
The instructor may adjust pacing to the group, but the course is organized around these core areas.
Foundations
Rhythm & Notation
Pulse, note values, time signatures and reading the symbols that organize written music.
Patterns
Scales & Keys
How scales are built, how key relationships work and how those patterns appear in music.
Harmony
Chords & Progressions
How chords are formed, how they relate to keys and how harmony supports melody.
Listening
Ear Training & Musical Awareness
Connect what you hear with the written concepts you are learning and recognize musical patterns more clearly.
Application
Song Structure & Real Music
Identify sections, recurring ideas and structure, then apply theory directly to repertoire, an instrument or voice.
See the pathway
See it. Hear it. Understand it. Then use it.
Theory becomes more useful when students connect written concepts to the music they already play, hear and create. The pathway builds those connections step by step instead of presenting theory as disconnected rules.
What students should take away
Practical understanding, not memorized definitions.
The goal is to make theory useful. Students should leave with a stronger ability to understand, describe and apply the musical ideas they encounter.
- Read rhythm and notation with more confidence.
- Understand how scales, keys and chords relate.
- Recognize basic harmonic and structural patterns.
- Connect theory concepts to an instrument or voice.
- Use clearer musical vocabulary when learning and communicating.

Music Theory Pathway FAQ
Do I need previous theory experience?
No. Beginners are welcome. The pathway begins with foundational concepts and builds toward practical application.
Do I need to already take lessons at Elite?
No. The course is open to current Elite students and students from the wider Windsor community.
Is this an RCM Certificate Program or exam-prep course?
No. This is an independent Elite Studios group course designed to strengthen practical music theory and musical literacy. If RCM exam preparation is your goal, mention it in the enrollment form so Elite can confirm whether this course is the right fit.
Can music theory count toward high-school credits in Ontario?
Eligible Royal Conservatory Certificate Program achievements can be recognized toward Ontario secondary-school music credits when the required practical and theory levels are successfully completed. This Elite Studios group course does not itself automatically grant an OSSD credit; students pursuing an RCM credit pathway should confirm the required RCM level and examination combination for their situation.
What instrument do I need?
No specific instrument is required to enroll. Students can connect the concepts to piano, guitar, voice, drums, flute, production or another area of musical study.
